ATTENDANCE, ABSENCES & TARDIES Regular attendance is a necessity for successful schoolwork. Any absence not only handicaps the individual students, but also creates a hardship on the entire class and teacher in making up the work. Each absence from the classroom should be completely justified. The following are considered excused absences: personal illness, serious illness in the immediate family, death or funeral in the immediate family, medical of dental appointments, and family requested trips as approved in advance by the school principal. On the other hand, students should be encouraged to stay home when they are not well. Students who are absent from school shall NOT attend evening activities. Whenever students are absent from school for more than 1 1/2 hours they are marked absent, regardless of the reason for being absent. Absences for less than 1 1/2 hours are not recorded. Absences are always rounded off to the nearest half-day. Often times students have a very necessary reason for being absent such as seeing a doctor, dentist, etc., but they are still counted absent if the time involves more than 1 1/2 hours. When a student is absent from school, parents should call the school or send a note explaining the reason for the absence. 4 Three unexcused tardies will be allowed per semester. On the third unexcused tardy a note will be sent home reminding parents that the next unexcused tardy will result in student being detained after school for 15 minutes. More than four unexcused tardies will result in detentions of 30 minutes each time the child is tardy. Detentions will be served Monday through Friday. Bus students will serve their detention on the next scheduled day. Parents are responsible for finding transportation for their child. The administration reserves the right to require additional conditions to be met before reinstatement after any suspension. 1st time violation will result in a suspension from all contests for 2 weeks and at least two activities. If the suspension happens at the end of an activity and there are not 2 activities left in that season, then the suspension may be longer than 2 weeks, because the student will not have missed two activities. 2nd time violation the student will be suspended from all activities the student is currently in, for the reminder of that sport/activity. In the event a season is almost completed, the suspension must cover at least 4 weeks and 4 activities. At the end of the sport/activity, the student may go out for another sport/activity, provided the student has met all conditions from the 1st and 2nd suspensions. The student will not be able to participate in any practices until being reinstated. A student may continue to practice if the coach desires. At the conclusion of the suspension, the student may be reinstated provided he/she has met any and all additionally agreed upon conditions during that period. The following year the student will be on a probationary status. If during that year a 4th incident occurs the student will be suspended for the remainder of that school year. LOST AND FOUND All articles found on the playground or in the school building will be turned in to the lost and found box in the school office. Children should come to the office to look for missing articles. Parents can help by clearly labeling all items of wearing apparel that will be removed at school such as overshoes, tennis shoes, Caps, coats, etc. Items will be taken to donation centers at the end of each nine weeks after parents and students have been notified to check for lost items. LUNCH INFORMATION Students have the opportunity to choose only those foods which they intend to eat in the school lunch program. This provision of the school lunch program is designed to reduce food waste and to give students the opportunity to select the foods which they want to eat. Each day students will be offered the complete lunch Which includes a serving of: 1.Milk 2. Bread 3. Meat 4. Fruit 5. Vegetables The servings of fruit and vegetables may be a combination of a serving of fruit and a serving of vegetables, or two servings of two different fruits, or two servings of different vegetables. The five food items shown above comprise the school lunch pattern and provide approximately one-third of the daily nutritional needs. Students may take all five food items, or may select full portions of four items or a combination of any three different items. However, the price per meal remains the same weather the student selects the minimum of three food items or takes all five food items. Parents who prefer may have their child bring a sack lunch. However, students who bring a sack lunch must be able to take care of their table service. Heating up lunches is the responsibility of the student. 21 We recommend that children in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades have lunches that do not require heating or have the pre-warmed food in a thermos. Sack lunches should not include pop or candy. LUNCH PAYMENTS The charge for the complete school lunch is $1.90 for pupils in grades Kdg-8. Breakfast charge will be $1.00. Milk for the Kindergarten and Pre-school students will be $4.00 per month or $36.00 for the entire school year. We would appreciate it if parents of the Kindergarten and Pre-school students would pay by the school year in advance. The school does not reimburse milk money. When sack lunches are brought to school, the pupils may buy a milk ticket for $4.00 for twenty cartons of milk at noon. All sack lunches must be eaten in the cafeteria. If a student desires a second carton of milk with his meal, the cost is $.50 per carton. Whole milk, low-fat milk, strawberry and chocolate flavored milk are all available at school. Students who eat school prepared hot lunches are required to take a carton of milk. If they do not want to drink this milk, they may leave it at the serving counter where the milk may be obtained at no charge by other grade school students. The Bennington lunch program is billed out of the district office. Lunch payment reminders will be sent home in the weekly Wednesday packets. Any questions regarding lunch, breakfast and milk payments may be directed to Cindy Regnier at (785) 488-3325. Please make checks payable to USD 240 and mail to: USD 240 Cindy Regnier PO Box 38 Bennington, KS 67422 Lunch bills must be kept paid. The Parent-Teacher/Link Club Committees have been organized on the premise that parent support and involvement can help the schools. Although the school board and administration cannot absolve themselves from legally constituted responsibility for the operation of the school through the establishment of policy and its administration, the committees provide for an opportunity for parents to give their ideas and to be service to the schools in the education of their children. Link Club is the parent/teacher organization for Bennington Grade School. It works to provide activities for students and support to staff in a variety of ways. Link Club sponsors many activities during the school year. Bennington Grade School parents and guardians are welcomed and encouraged to be involved. The school should be informed in advance about meetings. A faculty representative will be sent to all meetings. In this way, there can be better communication between home and school. Subject matter to be discussed by the committee and parents will be limited to issues, ideas and events of general application to the schools. Subjects concerning people or personalities are not appropriate for discussion in meetings involving the Parent- Teacher Committees. The School Board policies have specific ways for parents to deal with complaints. 24 CHEERLEADING Grade 8 students only who want to participate will be cheerleaders. The time will be before or after school practice. A school sponsor will be assigned. PETS Dogs sometimes constitute a nuisance around the school. Parents are asked that dogs and other pets not be allowed to follow children to school. PHYSICAL EDUCATION The physical education program for students in grades will be supervised by the physical education teachers. The athletic programs for boys and girls in grades 7 - 8 will be supervised by the coaches. Grades 7 - 8 boys and girls will need a physical exam to participate in sports & activities. Parents are responsible for making arrangements and bearing the cost for this requirement. Our objective in physical education is to help each learn how to control his body through basic body movements and development. Activities are aimed at improving strength, coordination, flexibility, agility, and endurance. The physical education program is not intended to be an athletic program. All students are required to participate in the physical education program. However, if sickness prevents participation, the student should bring a statement from their doctor or parents.
