NEWS RELEASE -Random Drug and Alcohol Testing
May 02, 2008
After a year of research into student drug testing the USD 240 Board of Education approved random drug testing for all 7-12 grade students within the district who are involved in extracurricular activities. The purpose of this program is threefold: (1) to provide for the health and safety of all students; (2) to undermine the effects of peer pressure by providing a legitimate reason for students to refuse to use illegal drugs; and (3) to encourage students who use drugs to participate in drug treatment programs. The procedure for initial and random testing of students is accomplished in conjunction with a third party administrator and uses random urine drug testing. The use of this type of procedure in a public school interscholastic activity is legal, as determined by the United States Supreme Court, in the case of Vernonia School District 47J (Oregon) v. Wayne and Judy Acton. The exact procedures and additional information will be available at the appropriate time.
If you have questions or concerns please contact your building administrator or Mr. Harlan.
