Bulldogs Lose Season Finale

The Sylvan Mustangs handed BHS two losses to bring the regular season to a close.  Both games were tight until late when the Mustangs were able to pull away. 

Game one found the Bulldogs down two after the first inning as Sylvan was able to use two walks and a hit to push their runs across.  The Mustangs were then held scoreless for the next three innings before scoring four unearned runs in the fifth.  With two outs and the bases loaded the Bulldog defense committed a critical error that resulted in the four unearned runs.  Sylvan then added four more runs in the top of the sixth to bring their total to 10.  The Bulldogs were frustrated all evening offensively as they could only muster two hits in game one.  Jordan Fief and Sarah Cherry both singled and were the only base runners for BHS.  Sadie Gantvoort took the loss as she threw all six innings.  Gantvoort allowed 10 runs, four earned, on six hits, 10 walks, one hit batter, and eight strikeouts.  The Bulldog defense committed three critical errors in the game but did make a number of nice plays behind Gantvoort.  Becca Reinking was involved in two good defensive plays as she threw out a runner attempting to steal second and started an inning ending play when she threw to Fief who was covering first on a bunt attempt.  The runner was safe but a Mustang runner tried to advance to third on the throw and Cherry, hustling in from left field to cover third, took the throw from Fief and applied the tag for the out.

Game two followed much the same script.  Again, Sylvan jumped to an early 2-0 first inning lead as they scored two unearned runs.  BHS then shut the Mustangs down until the fourth when Sylvan scored three runs.  The Mustangs added two more runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to bring their run total to nine.  The Bulldogs were finally able to push three runs across the plate in the bottom half of the sixth but it proved too little too late.  Offensively the Bulldogs were lead by Fief, Aubrey Oxandale, Caylie Burt, and Grace Freeman with one hit each.  Kaitlyn Wolf scored one of the three Bulldog runs as she reached on an error and scored on Oxandale’s hit.  Chantiel Frye also recorded an RBI when Fief scored on Frye’s ground out later in the inning.  Fief took the loss on the mound.  Fief threw seven innings allowing nine runs, four earned, on 10 hits, while walking three, and striking out seven.  Defensively the Bulldogs turned in several nice plays including a nice running catch by Catie Gwennap at second and Chelsea Jonte, center fielder, throwing out a runner attempting to advance from second to third.

With the losses the team’s record falls to 6-14.  The Bulldogs will play Monday, May 12^th in Salina against Republic County in the first round of Regionals.  The Bulldog’s record gave them a five seed and Republic County with a 7-13 record was awarded the fourth seed.
