I grew up in Tescott and graduated from Tescott High School.  I graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education.  I also have my Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Baker University. I have two daughters.  My oldest graduated from THS and is attending college.  My youngest is currently a THS student.  I enjoy hanging out with both of my daughters, reading, and gardening.

Hello! My name is Katie Kriley and I am originally from Smith Center, Kansas. I graduated in May of 2017 from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education. I have an energetic Spanish Water Dog named, Luna. She loves swimming, running, and playing fetch. I love attempting craft projects that I’ve found on Pinterest. I also really love gardening. My favorite plants are succulents so I make many terrariums and succulent gardens! I’m very excited for this year to begin and can’t wait to meet all my students!

I grew up in McPherson in a very large family.  I graduated from Emporia State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education and have my Master’s in Building Administration from Fort Hays State University.  I am married to Darren who is a graduate of Bennington High School.  We have four children that have either graduated or are attending Bennington.  I have taught both first and second grade at Bennington after being a stay-at-home mom for 12 years.  I enjoy watching my children participate in their sports and activities which seems to take up all of my free time!

What students will learn in 2nd grade

In ELA, our students will read both fiction and non-fiction stories that will assist them learning the standards and skills needed for 2nd grade (story structure, key details about a story, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency).  We will continue to work on phonics skills to become more fluent readers.  Writing skills will be tied into these areas as well.  Social Studies and Science topics will be integrated into these lessons.

2nd grade math skills include addition and subtraction within 20, working with equal groups (multiplication will start here!), place value (ones, tens, hundreds), measurement using both inch and centimeter, money, time to the nearest five minutes (even though we teach to the minute), graphs, and finally working with shapes (2-D and 3-D) to introduce fractions and symmetry.

Strategies for success

Please read at least 20 minutes every day with your child and ask questions about their reading.  Math facts are also very important to practice by using flashcards or a fun math app.  Also try to integrate everyday experiences into math skills (cooking, problem solving, money, time, numbers, etc.).
