Get to know your teacher

I am Jennifer Bartlett, and I teach the English Language Arts portion of 5th grade at Bennington Elementary School.  This is my 17th year in education and my 14th year at Bennington.  I spent ten years as the Library Media Specialist before moving back into the classroom.  I graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor’s degree and received my Master’s degree from Fort Hays.  My husband, Jeff, is a farmer and we have two children Kolbie and Jordan.  Most of our time is spent working as a family on our farm.  We also spend time with  sporting and 4-H events.

I am Rachel Ehlers.  I teach at Tescott Grade School.  I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 2000, and have taught in Kansas all of my 15 years in education.  Twelve of those years have been right here in the Twin Valley School District.  I began teaching 5th grade and coaching High School Volleyball during the 2016-17 school year.  My husband and I have two children, Danni and Nate.  Our family enjoys spending time at the lake when we are not at school functions.   I am Andrea Pickering.  I teach Math, Social Studies, and Science at Bennington Grade School.  This is my 11th year of teaching 5th grade, but only my 3rd year at Bennington.  I graduated from Luther College with a Fine Arts degree in Elementary Education and also hold an endorsement in ESOL from Fort Hays.  I have four children, Easton, Talan, Mara, and Hensley.  My husband, Curtis, is the head boy’s basketball coach at Bennington and sells insurance.  We spend a lot of our time participating in sports and camping during the summer.

What students will learn in 5th grade

In 5th grade students will attend Starbase and Ottawa County Ag Days with other possible field trips incorporated. Students will also begin band! Students will participate in PE and Music which will vary by school.  In Math, students will continue to work with multiplication and division of decimals, whole numbers, and fractions.  In ELA, students use the Journeys series which incorporates reading, spelling, and writing.  In Social Studies, students will learn about early explorers, the 13 colonies, the Revolutionary War, and the constitution.  In Science, students will learn about cells, biomes, landforms, energy, Newton’s Laws of motion, and will participate in a school-wide Science Fair.  We also work on developing and demonstrating positive character traits.

Strategies for success

Students are responsible for using a daily planner which should be signed by both teacher and guardian.  Weekly packets will be used to send home completed work and important school information which should also be signed and returned.  Each building has a private class Facebook page to share information, reminders, and pictures.  Both buildings use the Accelerated Reader program and encourage students to make and meet personal reading goals which requires independent reading at home.
