Get to know your teacher

Hi, my name is Katie Deckert, and I teach 5th grade at Tescott Elementary School. I earned my Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University in 2017 and later earned my Master’s of Science in Education- Reading Specialist.  My husband and I reside in Tescott, Kansas with our daughter, Ivy, and our Spanish Water Dog, Luna. We are so excited to be welcoming our second daughter in January 2022. When I’m not teaching, my days are filled with chasing Ivy and Luna around or helping my husband on the farm. I’m so happy to be a part of Tescott Elementary School and can’t wait to see what the year has in store for us!

Hi Bennington! I am excited to be a part of the Bulldog team.  For the past 15 years I have taught elementary school in Salina.  We recently just moved to Bennington and have found it to be such a great community.  I have 3 kids 2 of which attend BGS.  Most of our spare time is dedicated to the ball fields, basketball courts, and gymnastics mat. We also love to travel. I can’t wait to get to know the families of the place we now call home.  Go Bulldogs! I am Andrea Pickering.  I teach Math, Social Studies, and Science at Bennington Grade School.  This is my 11th year of teaching 5th grade, but only my 3rd year at Bennington.  I graduated from Luther College with a Fine Arts degree in Elementary Education and also hold an endorsement in ESOL from Fort Hays.  I have four children, Easton, Talan, Mara, and Hensley.  My husband, Curtis, is the head boy’s basketball coach at Bennington and sells insurance.  We spend a lot of our time participating in sports and camping during the summer.

What students will learn in 5th grade

In 5th grade students will attend Starbase and Ottawa County Ag Days with other possible field trips incorporated. Students will also begin band! Students will participate in PE and Music which will vary by school.  In Math, students will continue to work with multiplication and division of decimals, whole numbers, and fractions.  In ELA, students use the Journeys series which incorporates reading, spelling, and writing.  In Social Studies, students will learn about early explorers, the 13 colonies, the Revolutionary War, and the constitution.  In Science, students will learn about cells, biomes, landforms, energy, Newton’s Laws of motion, and will participate in a school-wide Science Fair.  We also work on developing and demonstrating positive character traits.

Strategies for success

Students are responsible for using a daily planner which should be signed by both teacher and guardian.  Weekly packets will be used to send home completed work and important school information which should also be signed and returned.  Each building has a private class Facebook page to share information, reminders, and pictures.  Both buildings use the Accelerated Reader program and encourage students to make and meet personal reading goals which requires independent reading at home.
