HOA LEADERSHIP SUMMIT! On Tuesday, Oct. 15, eight students from Bennington High School attended this year’s first HOA Leadership Summit. The summit is designed to offer students the opportunity to not only represent their school, but to also develop leadership skills to bring back to their campus and put them into action. Avery Feil, student support services and sponsor, serves as the group’s sponsor. “Our students did a phenomenal job at asking thoughtful questions and providing meaningful answers. In doing so, they earned HOA Bucks, and came away with the most HOA Bucks after the initial count.” The summit featured Sports in Kansas founder Chet Kuplen and KSHSAA’s executive director Bill Faflick. Kuplen spoke about the importance of being mindful of the digital footprint student-athletes are leaving behind on social media through their posts and electronic communications. Faflick shared the difference between Sportsmanship vs. Behavior/Attitude, as well as showing respect to other players, teams, coaches, fans, sports equipment, and even officials. Those attending the event were sponsor Ms. Feil, Abby , Addyson, Derick, Mckenzie, Cade, Zeni , Karson and Madileya.

Parents, students and staff, The past couple of weeks have been challenging for our Bennington School community. However, I wanted to express my gratitude for the support and encouragement from community members, parents, staff and students. In addition, I wanted to provide a shout out to the admin team, staff and students who have stepped up to face these challenges head-on and provide leadership in difficult times. No one wants to face the challenges we have had these past few weeks, but our response and reflection on what has transpired will only help in developing perseverance in tough times and improved preparedness in keeping students and staff safe. Over the past week, our admin team has worked hand in hand with law enforcement to review our response and communication. It has been determined that the most recent incident was a low-level unsubstantiated threat. The two previous incidents called for investigation but were not determined to be threats to students or staff. Through that process we are able to refine our response in times like these. Administration also met with the student body this week to review expectations. In the weeks ahead we will be taking a proactive approach in empowering our students to take a positive lead here at BHS. Several meetings with leadership groups have been scheduled to give our leaders tools to deter undesirable behaviors. We are looking forward to the positive outcomes that will follow not only in reducing undesirable behaviors, but also creating a positive community that promotes doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. Unfortunately, the challenges we have experienced in the past few weeks have overshadowed many of the great things that are happening at Bennington Schools. Our homecoming week has been one of great enthusiasm and energy with great participation in spirit days, hallway decorating, the parade and our pep rally. We have great kids here at Bennington and a staff that is second to none in their commitment to students. Here are just a few of the other awesome things happening here at Bennington Jr./Sr. High School: Our attendance rate is higher at this time of year than in the previous year Fewer students have been ineligible to participate in activities than at this time last year 12 JH students have been named to the District Honor Choir 8 students attended the All-State Music Workshop The FFA chapter has grown to 68 members More than 40 students are a part of the high school musical production Nearly a dozen cross-country runners have set multiple personal bests FFA members have medalled in multiple contests The HS VB boasts a 17-10 record An HOA leadership team has been developed will represent BHS at several league activities A new Leadership & Civic Engagement class provides service opportunities for 20 students on a weekly basis Again, BHS is a great place and I am proud to be a part of a community that provides support in not only the good times, but also in the difficult times as well. Together, we can ensure that students at BHS have positive, valuable experiences that will last a lifetime that will grow them into responsible, caring adults. Mr. Clark - BHS Principal
